Fall Cleaning Vancouver | Getting Your Home Ready for the Rainy Season
Fall in Vancouver means cooler temperatures, shorter days and, of course, plenty of rain. As we start spending more time indoors, it’s also a great time to give your home a seasonal reset.
Fall is a great time to reset your home and tackle some of the areas that may have been missed during regular cleaning. As the weather changes, dirt, dust and moisture can build up more quickly. A little extra attention now can make your home feel cleaner and more comfortable throughout the rainy months ahead.
At Top Hat Cleaning, we see firsthand how quickly Vancouver’s fall weather can make its way indoors. Here are some of the areas worth adding to your fall cleaning Vancouver checklist.
Fall Cleaning Vancouver Starts at the Entrance
Your entrance takes a beating over the fall and winter months. Wet shoes, muddy boots, umbrellas, jackets, leaves and everyday traffic can quickly turn this small area into one of the messiest spots in the house.
For a proper fall clean, I like to take everything out of the entrance first. Lift the mats, move the shoes and baskets, and clear the area so you can actually see what needs attention. Vacuum thoroughly, wash the baseboards and give the floors a good cleaning. Wipe down the walls where needed, removing fingerprints and marks, and don’t forget light switches, doors and door casings — all those high-touch areas that quietly collect grime over time.
Once everything is clean and dry, put back only what you actually need. Labelled baskets are great for scarves, gloves and other small items, and having a designated spot for umbrellas keeps wet ones contained. It’s also a good time to go through jackets and coats so you don’t end up with a huge pile taking over the entrance.
A little organization after the cleaning is finished makes the space much easier to maintain, especially once Vancouver’s rainy season really gets going.
Keep Vancouver Rain and Mud From Travelling Through the House
If you have dogs, Vancouver’s rainy season can mean wet paws and furry bodies coming through the door several times a day. I like to keep a towel in the garage and use that entrance whenever possible, or make the mudroom the designated spot for wet dogs. Before they get any farther into the house, take a minute to dry their paws, legs and those furry bodies.
For those living in a downtown Vancouver condo or townhome, where a garage or mudroom may not be an option, keep a couple of dog towels in a basket near the front door instead. Keeping towels right where you need them makes this much easier, especially when you’re coming home from a rainy walk. Give those paws a good wipe and deal with the mud before it has a chance to travel across your freshly cleaned floors.
Maybe this is also the season to check out some of those adorable little raincoats and booties I see on our Yaletown four-legged fashionistas. They’re cute, but they can also help keep some of that Vancouver rain and mud off your dog — and off your floors.
A towel by the door, a little rain gear and a quick wipe-down after walks can save you a whole lot of cleaning later.
Deep Cleaning Baseboards and High-Dust Areas
A good fall cleaning Vancouver routine starts at the top and works its way down. There’s no sense cleaning your floors and then knocking dust onto them later! Start by looking up — ceiling corners, light fixtures, the tops of doors and frames, and those higher ledges we tend to forget about.
Then work your way down through the room. Dust furniture, wipe doors and door frames, clean window ledges and pay attention to fingerprints and marks on walls and light switches. Finally, get down to the baseboards, where dust, pet hair and everyday grime love to collect.
Once you’ve worked from top to bottom, vacuum thoroughly and wash the floors. It takes a little more time than your regular weekly clean, but this is where you really start to see and feel the difference.
Clean Behind Furniture and Under Beds
Here’s where fall cleaning Vancouver gets a little more satisfying — move things! Pull out the nightstands, move lighter furniture and take a look behind and underneath the bed. Who knows what treasures you might find back there, along with the dust bunnies and pet hair that have been quietly collecting for months.
Vacuum underneath and behind everything you can safely move, wipe those newly exposed baseboards and get right into the corners. It may feel like a lot when you’re in the middle of it, but the satisfaction when it’s finished is so rewarding.
We love that feeling of walking through a home and knowing it has been cleaned well — not just the areas everyone can see, but the ones they can’t.
Cleaning Windows and Window Sills During Vancouver’s Rainy Season
Once Vancouver’s rainy season arrives, windows tend to stay closed much more often. Before that happens, wipe down window sills, frames and tracks and remove accumulated dirt and debris.
Pay Attention to Moisture Around Windows
Fall is also a good time to pay attention to areas around your windows where moisture tends to collect. Keeping window areas clean makes it easier to notice changes and keep these spaces fresh during the wetter months. Health Canada also recommends keeping an eye on damp areas in the home and addressing moisture problems promptly
Fall Bedroom Cleaning and Bedding
Fall is the perfect time to switch out the bedding. Wash everything — sheets, duvet covers, summer blankets and anything else that has been in regular rotation. Before bringing out the heavier blankets and warmer bedding, make sure everything going into storage is clean and completely dry.
And those summer blankets? Let’s not stack them on the chair in the corner of the bedroom — guilty! Fold them up and put them away. The same goes for anything else that has slowly found a home on a chair, bench or dresser over the summer.
When it comes to keeping a bedroom clean, less really is more. The more organized the room is and the less we have sitting out, the easier it is to dust, vacuum and keep everything looking clean between your regular house cleaning days.
Once the clutter is out of the way, dust the bedside tables, lamps and headboard, vacuum thoroughly and enjoy putting that fresh fall bedding on the bed. There’s something about climbing into freshly washed bedding on a cool Vancouver night that makes all that work worth it.
Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen for Fall
Okay, the kitchen — this is where fall cleaning Vancouver gets serious. First, look at your counters. Do we really need 15 appliances sitting out? If you haven’t used one in months, ask yourself whether it deserves permanent counter space. And if the toaster is staying, put a tray or something washable underneath it. Those crumbs have an incredible ability to travel everywhere.
Now, look up. I mean really look up. See that little gap between the top of your kitchen cupboards and the ceiling? I’ve cleaned kitchens where there was enough dust and greasy buildup hanging from the tops of those cupboards that you could practically see it waving hello. 😂 This is the time to attack it. Start at the top, work your way down, and get those cabinet fronts, handles and backsplashes while you’re at it.
Once you’ve worked your way down, it’s time to open those cupboards. I do this myself: I sit right down on the kitchen floor, pull everything out and start organizing. It may sound a little crazy, but it’s actually the perfect opportunity to wipe down the shelves and inside the cupboards. Before you put everything back, take a good look at what you own.
How many mugs do we really need? Do we need Christmas mugs, fall mugs, spring mugs and a cupboard full of just-in-case mugs? And it’s not only mugs. If there are dishes, gadgets or appliances you haven’t touched in years, maybe it’s time to donate a few. I’m guilty too — “Oh, I need that!” But do I? Really?
Pull out the appliances you can safely move and clean behind and underneath them. The more often you do these little jobs, the easier they are. Leave that stove or refrigerator untouched for four years and suddenly you haven’t got a cleaning job — you’ve got a Saturday project.
Once you’ve cleared out what you don’t use, wiped everything down and put the kitchen back together, take a look at those counters again. Less sitting out means less to move, fewer places for crumbs and grease to hide, and a kitchen that is so much easier to keep clean.
And perhaps most importantly, you can actually see your kitchen counter again. 😄
Clean the Refrigerator and Pantry Before the Holiday Season
Now comes the refrigerator and pantry — and this is where we have to be a little ruthless. Take everything out, wipe down the shelves and drawers, and check those expiry dates before putting things back.
My granddaughter used to come into my kitchen, start looking through everything and announce, “Grandma, this is expired!” Meanwhile, there I was trying to hold on to it for dear life. 😂 Apparently, I thought that jar at the back of the refrigerator was going to become useful again someday.
Go through the sauces, condiments, spices and all those things hiding at the back. If it’s expired, you haven’t used it in forever or you genuinely can’t remember when you bought it, maybe it’s time to let it go.
Then do the same with the pantry. Wipe the shelves, group similar things together and take stock of what you already have. You may discover you don’t need another can of something because you already have six hiding behind everything else.
A clean, organized refrigerator and pantry also make it much easier to see what you actually need before the holiday season begins — and Grandma gets to keep her dignity because nobody is checking the expiry dates anymore. 😂
Fall Cleaning Vancouver: Don’t Forget the Bathroom
Let’s talk bathrooms — because there are a few spots in here that are very good at hiding in plain sight.
First, don’t neglect that bathroom exhaust fan. You would be amazed at how much dust can collect on those covers. Sometimes they’re so coated you have to wonder how any air is getting through. Give the cover a good vacuum first, and if it still needs some attention, wipe it carefully with a damp cloth and then dry it thoroughly. It’s one of those little jobs that can make a surprisingly big difference.
Now, the shower curtain. If your liner has started developing those lovely pink or orange patches, it’s asking for some attention. Many washable shower curtains and liners can go straight into the washing machine — always check the care instructions first — and then be hung right back up to dry. If yours has reached the point of no return, maybe it has served its time and deserves retirement.
While you’re there, take a good look around the shower and tub. Grout, caulking, corners and tracks need more than a quick once-over. Spraying cleaner on something and wiping it isn’t cleaning. Give the appropriate product time to work according to its directions, then get in there and actually scrub where needed. Those little details can make a huge difference to how clean the entire bathroom feels.
Then there are the places nobody talks about: the baseboards behind the toilet, the wall around the toilet-paper holder, the sides of the vanity and all those little hinges and edges inside the vanity doors. Open those cupboards, pull everything out and give the inside a proper clean before putting things back.
And while everything is out, be ruthless. We do not need a collection of empty shampoo bottles. 😂 Go through the half-used products, old cosmetics and things you keep moving around but never actually use. Let them go — I promise, it will be okay. Clean the drawers and shelves, organize what you’re keeping and enjoy how much easier the bathroom is to maintain when there’s less stuff in it.
And finally, the floor. Unless your bathroom is the size of Grand Central Station, this is a hand-wash job. Get down there and clean right into the corners, along the baseboards, behind and around the toilet and around the vanity. A bathroom floor isn’t that big, and this is one of those times when doing it by hand lets you actually see what you’re cleaning. Give it a proper wash, and when you stand back up, you’ll know it’s clean.
That’s a proper bathroom reset: not just a shiny sink and a clean toilet, but all those easily forgotten details that make you walk back in afterward and think, okay, now this bathroom is clean.
Fall Cleaning Vancouver: Don’t Forget Our Pets
We’ve cleaned the kitchen, tackled the bathroom and washed our own bedding, so let’s not forget about the four-legged members of the family. Their things deserve a little fall cleaning too.
Start with the dog and cat beds. Take off any removable covers and wash them according to the care instructions. Wash their blankets, vacuum the beds themselves and get underneath and around them while you’re at it. Nobody wants a stinky dog bed, and with Vancouver’s wet weather, damp coats and muddy paws, pet bedding can start smelling less than fresh pretty quickly.
Food and water bowls are another easy one to include in your regular cleaning routine. I have dogs myself, and their bowls go into the dishwasher every day. Water bowls in particular can develop that slippery film around the inside, so a good regular wash keeps everything fresh and clean for them too.
While you’re at it, wash the mats underneath their bowls, wipe down their feeding area and take a look through the toy basket. Wash whatever toys can safely be cleaned, and perhaps this is also the moment to say goodbye to that poor stuffed animal that has been loved beyond recognition. 😂
Our pets live right alongside us — sleeping in their beds, playing with their toys and, if yours are anything like mine, probably spending a fair amount of time on the furniture too. When we’re giving the house a good seasonal clean, it makes sense to freshen up their things at the same time.
After all, fall cleaning Vancouver is for the whole household — paws included. 🧡
