14 Sep How Often Should You Have Your House Cleaned? | Top Hat Cleaning
How often should you have your house cleaned by a professional cleaning service? Weekly? Every two weeks? Monthly?
There really isn’t one answer that works for every home.
At Top Hat Cleaning, we have been cleaning homes throughout Vancouver and surrounding communities for almost 20 years. Over that time, I have learned that the right cleaning schedule has much more to do with the people living in a home, the size of the space, pets, lifestyle and personal preferences than following a standard schedule.
And this might sound a little strange coming from the owner of a cleaning company, but sometimes I actually tell clients that they may be having us come too often.
Does Every Home Need Weekly Cleaning?
No. Some homes absolutely benefit from weekly cleaning, while others simply don’t need it.
A busy family with children and pets may have plenty for our cleaners to do every week. Floors get dirty, bathrooms are being used constantly, kitchens need attention, and dust and pet hair can accumulate quickly.
But compare that with a smaller home occupied by one person who is naturally quite tidy. We may arrive every week for a two-hour appointment and discover that there simply isn’t two hours of cleaning to do.
When that happens consistently, I will talk to the client about it.
If we’re getting through everything in an hour because the home is already in great shape, I’d rather be honest and suggest trying a different schedule than have someone continue paying for time they don’t really need.
When Weekly House Cleaning Makes Sense
There are many situations where weekly professional cleaning is absolutely worthwhile.
Larger households generally create more cleaning. Children, pets, frequent cooking, working from home and simply having more people moving through the house can all make a noticeable difference.
There are also people who simply prefer having their home professionally cleaned every week.
We have seniors who enjoy weekly service. We have clients who appreciate the routine and others who simply like knowing their bathrooms, kitchen, floors and other areas will receive regular attention.
If weekly cleaning works within your budget and makes your life easier, there is nothing wrong with choosing it.
Our job isn’t to tell someone they can’t have weekly cleaning. Our job is to provide an honest assessment of what we’re seeing while respecting what the client wants.
Sometimes There Simply Isn’t Enough Cleaning to Do
People sometimes assume professional cleaners can always find something else to clean.
That’s not necessarily true.
When cleaners consistently maintain a home, they are staying on top of the areas that normally accumulate dirt and buildup. If the home is small, relatively low traffic and already well maintained, there may eventually be very little that needs attention only seven days after the previous visit.
We can certainly look at additional areas when appropriate, but we don’t believe in creating unnecessary work simply to fill an appointment.
Sometimes a clean home is just that — a clean home.
And yes, believe it or not, cleaners can get a little bored when there genuinely isn’t enough to do!
Is Biweekly Cleaning Enough?
For many households, cleaning every two weeks provides a very good balance.
Two weeks gives enough time for bathrooms, kitchens, floors, dust and other areas to need attention again without allowing the home to become difficult to maintain.
It can also provide better value for someone who wants regular professional house cleaning but doesn’t generate enough work to justify a weekly appointment.
This is why, when deciding how often should you have your house cleaned, we recommend looking at the actual condition of the home rather than automatically choosing weekly service.
If you’re considering how often you should have your house cleaned, biweekly service can be an excellent place to start. The schedule can always be adjusted once we see how your home responds between visits.
What About Monthly Cleaning?
Monthly cleaning can work well for some households, particularly smaller homes, homes with fewer occupants or clients who handle much of the everyday upkeep themselves.
However, four weeks also allows more time for dust, bathroom buildup, kitchen grease, pet hair and floors to require additional attention.
That doesn’t mean monthly cleaning is wrong. It simply means the cleaning appointment may be more involved than a weekly or biweekly visit.
Your cleaning schedule should make sense for your home, not somebody else’s.
We’ll Tell You If We Think You’re Booking Too Often
This is important to me as a business owner.
If our cleaners are regularly finishing much earlier than expected because there isn’t enough work to do, I’m going to let you know.
You might tell me, “That’s okay, Tara. I still want you every week.”
And my answer will be: absolutely.
If you prefer weekly cleaning, it fits your budget and having us there gives you something of value, we’re happy to continue.
But another client might appreciate knowing that they could move to every two weeks without seeing much difference in their home.
I’d rather give someone that choice.
How Often Should You Have Your House Cleaned?
There is no universal answer to how often should you have your house cleaned because every household has different needs.
For some homes, it’s weekly. For many, it’s every two weeks. For others, monthly or occasional professional cleaning is enough.
There are also times when your needs change. A household might need more frequent cleaning during a particularly busy period and less at another time.
At Top Hat Cleaning, we don’t believe the goal should be getting a client to book the greatest number of appointments possible. We want the cleaning service to make sense for the home and for the person paying for it.
After almost 20 years providing cleaning services in Vancouver and surrounding communities, one thing has become very clear: the best cleaning schedule is the one that actually matches your home, your lifestyle and your budget.
And if we think you’re paying us to come more often than you need us?
We’ll tell you.
